Our next meeting is on April 2nd at 7pm in the Pavilion and we will welcome Professor Cathy Waters, talking on Armchair Travel in Household Words. Cathy first gave this presentation at the 2024 Dickens Fellowship International  Annual Conference.

Dickens delighted in the various forms of vicarious journeying and holiday-making that emerged with new mass cultural technologies in the nineteenth century, and Household Words contained many armchair travel narratives designed to transport the reader imaginatively to scenes at home or abroad. This talk will discuss selected examples contributed by Dickens and George Augustus Sala
